The New Zealand adventure brand, Macpac, have returned to our shelves after a 10 year absence - but why? We've especially zoned in on their bags, but it's not because we're lacking in the bag department; Deuter, Lowe Alpine, Millet, Crux, Arc'teryx and Lightwave are all household favourites, each of them catering to a wide range of activities. So what makes Macpac so special?

Who are they?
Founded in 1973 by Bruce McIntyre, Macpac began out of the back of Bruce's parents' garage in Christchurch, New Zealand. When creating Macpac Bruce loved the idea you could travel all over the planet with a Macpac piece. "It could take you anywhere," he says, "You could trust that it was going to get you back in one piece, and the gear would stand up to the rigors of New Zealand’s most extreme conditions. I loved that notion. It wasn’t just for fine weather, or just for extreme conditions. It works everywhere."

From humble beginnings Macpac have gone from strength to strength, selling a wide range of products all over the world, creating a loyal following from all kinds of adventurers from all walks of life - but what sets them apart?

Sustainability, Sustainability, Sustainability...
The most exciting thing about Macpac - for us at least - is how they make their products; they're made to last. Their bags are crafted using ethically sourced materials and if one of their products fails within warranty, they'll repair it free of charge! All of these practices and policies help to reduce waste and create a culture of buying once, forever! You only need to feel the tough canvas fabric to know you have a product that can take on any adventure.

But these guys are not content with resting on their laurels. Endeavouring to improve their standards, they aim to be only using materials that have been certified by a 3rd party for minimal environmental impact by 2021. Currently they use100% organic cotton wherever possible, such as their bags which are made from their super durable AzTec canvas fabric. They also meet the Responsible Down Standard requirements in all of their insulated down products; happy birds, happy campers!

Final thoughts...
In an age where people are becoming increasingly aware of the impact they have on the planet, it's crucial to have companies like Macpac who are making high performance gear sustainably and ethically, so that we can preserve the outdoors while we enjoy it. We're proud to stock brands like Macpac who want people to love the outdoors as much as they do. Be like Macpac - combine performance with preservation!
