Tents

For single skinned Gore-Tex tents for use at extreme altitudes and serious base camp tents you will need to check out our Extreme Expedition Tents.

Our range of fell running and adventure racing tents includes the world's lightest tent, the Terra Nova Laser Photon, which weighs an unbelievable 790g, and the extremely popular Lightwave t0 Trek, which is tough enough to be used for backpacking too. There is plenty more from other manufacturers such as VauDe!

Our first love at Up and Under is mountains, and here you'll find some excellent tents for having a sleep on them. The staff favourite is the rock-solid Crux X2 Storm. For those who want a stable tent, but need to keep weight low, try the Lightwave F2 Ultra or the g1 and g2 Ultra. The range also includes contributions from Terra Nova with their various Quasar and Hyperspace options.

If you're not too bothered about weight, and don't expect to camp on mountain tops, have a look at the Vaude Taurus and Campo series or our range of Family, Group and Economy tents.

Most of the catagories on the comparison chart are self explanatory. However;

  1. Desert & Safari suitable tents have a free-standing inner which can be pitched on its own, they also have large areas of mosquito mesh for ventilation.
  2. Ultralightweight tents weigh 1.5kg or less for one person, and 2.5kg or less for two people.
  3. Stability gives an indication of the weather proofness of the tent:
    1. Fairweather lowland camping only,
    2. Year round lowland - some mountain use, and
    3. Mountain tents designed to take the worst the world can throw at them.
  4. Outer first pitching (and inner and outer together) tents mean that the inner stays completely dry when you're forced to pitch in a downpour and so is arguably the best option if you do most of your camping in the U.K.
  5. Inner first pitching tents give maximum strength to weight ratios. The poles are threaded into the inner and the flysheet tightened down over the whole lot. The inner, outer and poles work together as an integeral unit to provide a very stable shelter. Look for tents with continuous pole sleeves as generaly these are so fast to pitch that the inner hardly gets wet at all.
