Polartec Power Grid Fleece

Patagonia's R1 Hoody is most definitely a pinnacle piece of Patagonia's classic range. This has been a staple product for many outdoor sports enthusiasts for the best part of 15 years. The R1 not only is outstanding in performance, it stands out as one of the flag ships for Patagonia's environmentally friendly produced products through its recycled polyester. Bet you wouldn't believe this hoody has a past life as a plastic bottle!

Why is it so amazing?

Polartec® Power Grid™ is a common fabric used in outdoor midlayers, but there are different grades of Polartec® and as you would expect... this is simply the best!

Polartec® Power Grid™ works by the high loft squares absorbing the moisture and spreading it across the fabric surface for your body heat to dry. The high loft squares also trap the heat between the fabric fibres keeping you toasty warm.

The layering system becomes essential with products that are technical, to give you the best performance possible. When the R1 is worn with a wicking baselayer such as the: Odlo Collection, Rab Dryflo Collection, Patagonia Capeline Thermal it moves the moisture and body heat through the layers, creating a self-regulating thermo climate that keeps you dry, fresh and just right when your on the move.

Finishing touches are added when coupled with a breathable outer and insulation layer, this carries the moisture through to the outside world, reducing the chances of condensation. Products such as our softshells, breathable insulation (Proton and Nano-Air) and finally...a waterproof for when the weather really comes in. Most of our waterproof range offer the level of breathability and moisture management to gain the best  from your layering system, to keep you happy when you're working hard.

R1 hoody features:

  • Hood - The hood is created in a close fit balaclava style, which is ergonomically designed for layering, and for keeping your head as draught free as possible when you need to draw everything close. The face guard comes up in front of your face (can be worn over your nose) making it ideal for back country skiing, alpinism and general bad weather conditions.
  • Shoulder Seem - This is off the shoulder creating a minimal chaffing, which in turn creates the product to be more hard wearing.
  • Flatlock Seams - Creates a really comfortable garment especially if worn next to the skin, or under many layers.
  • On Seam Thumb Loops - These have been done really well, so that when not in use they don't give you a cold draught on your wrist. Their also done at an angle which complements the angle of your thumb, making it super comfy when in use. An extra feature to the thumb loop is a soft fleece edge, making it even more comfortable when worn with gloves.
  • Dropped Hem and Long Body - Designed to be tucked in your waterproof trousers or harness, so that it doesn't ride up when you are out and about.
  • Kissing-welt - This is a soft layer of fabric behind the zip, making it comfortable to be worn next to the skin, to minimise chaffing and discomfort, especially on the chin.
  • Chest Pocket - will fit a GPS, compass or some liner gloves. Inside the pocket is a vented back which enables you to use it as a vent if you're getting a little to warm.
  • Side Gusset - Allows freedom of movement whist keeping you warm.
  • 364 g (12.85 oz) - Super light, packing down to a tiny size, perfect for your alpine backpack.
  • Spiral-stitch Construction - On the sleeves so you can push them up with no ensuing forearm pump. Ideal for those of you that like to role your sleeves up, to get 'stuck in'.
  • Polygiene® Permanent Odour Control - This is a EU Medical Class 1 treatment (same as bandages) that creates an environment that bacteria can't develop and create an odour. This doesn't effect the individual wearing the product, just makes your travel companions a little happier.
  • Blue Sign approved - This certifies that the product has fabric, material, treatments and construction in the most ethical and environmentally friendly way possible.

This is a fab fleece... that is so much more than any other fleece. Come on in to store to check it out.

As part of the Patagonia ethos they have released a few videos to help portray what they stand for, and what they are all about.

Don't bottle out... find out about the recycling process for the blue sign approved polyester:
