Waterproofs that show the way forward at Up and Under, Cardiff for Autumn-Winter 2021/2022
As ever our range focusses heavily on waterproof clothing that will perform in wild wet Welsh winters. Our experienced staff select those products that have hoods, zips, cuffs, cuts and fabrics that are up to their personal and our demanding expectations. Believe me, there are plenty of options out there that don't make the cut. As ever we expect and select the best and thats what you get to choose from.
For this season we have also seen an increasing additional focus on the environmental impact and human impact on the manufacturing of waterproof jackets and trousers. The environmental impact works in both ways, i.e. what negative impacts can be reduced and what positive impacts can be made. By recycling we reduce production from raw materials which helps reduce the need for their extraction and processing. The recycled materials used are not ending up in landfill and if they are made from fishing nets and plastic bottles recovered from the sea, the benefits of reduced micro-plastics in the environment, and healthier eco-systems is easy to see.
Recycled Face Fabric
Examples of jackets being made with a recycled face fabric are increasingly common, such as our long running best seller which is updated to recycled for this season - the Rab Kangri GTX Jacket and Rab Kangri GTX Pants for men and Rab Kangri GTX Jacket Womens. Other products using a recycled face include the excellent mountain walking and mountaineering shells Montane Alpine Resolve Jacket Mens and Montane Womens Alpine Resolve Jacket, Rab Latok GTX Jacket and Patagonia Dual Aspect Jacket Mens and Patagonia Womens Dual Aspect Jacket and Patagonia Mens Duel Aspect Bib. The ever popular light and packable Marmot Precip Eco Pants and Marmot Precip Eco Fullzip Pants for men and Marmot Women's Precip Eco Full Zip Pant that combine well with many of our range of jackets but are most similar to the recycled face fabric Rab Downpour Eco Jacket for men and Rab Women's Downpour Eco Jacket.
Removing perfluorinated chemicals from the manufacturing process adds another dimension to reducing the negative imapcts of clothing production and Patagonia's Dual Aspect Jackets and Bibs lead the way here, in less serious products the Rab Downpour Eco Jackets and Marmot Precip Eco Pants also feature a PFC free DWR coating.
Recycled and Recyclable
Most waterproof jackets are composed of 3 layers of different materials bonded together and as such can't really be recycled. The Rab Arc Eco Jacket uses a 3-layer Pertex® Shield Revolve setup which is made from 100% post-consumer recycled polyester to produce the face fabric, membrane and backer. As each component is made up of a single polymer this makes it much easier to recycle the jacket at the end of its life. It also features a PFC DWR. So now raw material requirement and production impacts are reduced and the opportunity to recycle the jacket into something else at the end becomes reality as well!
Something else that you can look out for in our store are bluesign® products. These are products that are certified made with at least 90% bluesign® approved materials. The designation guarantees the highest level of consumer assurance, responsible use of resources and minimum impact on humans and the environment. The Mammut Crater HS Hooded Jacket is bluesign approved as are Granger's PFC free cleaning and reproofing products, which even if you don't need a new waterproof, should be used to keep your existing waterproofs functioning and lasting as long as possible (the best way to save the planet).
Anyone that has been a customer of Up and Under over the past 40 years is likely to remember visits from the Patagonia Worn-Wear van, where a team come to the store to fix garments to help prolong their life. Unfortunately this isn't a very sustainable approach and neither is sending warranty items half way across Europe for repair, so where possible we recommend taking responsibility of your kit to make it last longer by home repairing with things such as McNett Tenacious Tape, Gore-Tex Patches and Seamgrip and Waterproof Sealant.
Fair Trade Certified™ sewn means that in the case of the Patagonia Duel Aspect Jackets and Bibs that Patagonia pay a premium for every product which goes directly to the workers at the factory, and they decide how to spend it. In each factory, a democratically elected committee of Fair Trade workers decides how the funds will be used on community projects, health-care programs, child-care centers, to purchase products they could not otherwise afford, or to take as a cash bonus. The program also promotes worker health and safety as well as social and environmental compliance, and encourages dialogue between workers and management.
The Fair Wear Foundation requires its members to strive to ensure fair and safe working conditions in all factories making its products and to systematically improve working conditions throughout its supply chain. Mammut was the first outdoor brand to join the Fair Wear Foundation and has attained leader level within its structure, we stock their super durable Crater HS Hooded Jacket. Sprayway who are our entry waterproof clothing brand still have high ethical standards when it comes to manufacturing their Santiago Jacket and Rainpant for men and Atlanta Jacket and Rainpant for women, All Day Rainpants for both men and women and Junior Rainpant for kids, and have also attained leader status. Rab and Montane are members that are working through the Fair Wear procedure to achieve such heights.
Climate Neutral Certification has been achieved by Rab in 2020 and 2021 doing things like orders shipped with a CO2 neutral courier, using 100% renewable electricty in the UK, reduction in size and weight of hangtags, 50% recycled material in polybags and finally offsetting via carbon credits to support projects that reduce or remove emissions.
