Here at Up and Under we realise that the most important piece of equipment for anyone in the outdoors is probably their footwear. Warm, dry and well cushioned feet are happy feet. And happy feet make for happy people, who can happily walk for miles over path, tussock and scree. As with the rest of the body we recommend a layering system, of a thin wicking liner sock overlain by a sock for shock absorption and warmth if necessary.
Fell racers and mountain marathon enthusiasts will want to go our dedicated Fell Running section to find running socks, although some of Bridgedale's walking socks are still suitable.
Bridgedale Coolmax liners for men and women will help keep feet happy by wicking away moisture and preventing that hot soupy boot feeling.
For summer and warmer weather walking, we recommend the Light Hiker from Bridgedale. These include women's specific options, which are slightly differently shaped. The midweight ranges are also highly recommended, in particular the Trekking series, which are great for long day walks on harsh ground.
For mountaineering and other purposes where you expect to encounter extremely cold temperatures, we recommend a slightly heavier weight and warmer sock to keep your toes. The BridgedaleSummit series are ideal for most winter activities. Seal Skinz, who make the excellent Ultra Grip gloves, supply waterproof socks in two weights. You can walk through wet grass, puddles and even mountain streams without wetting a toe, and they are surprisingly breathable.
