When a climber falls the belay karabiner is pulled upwards into the notch on the Jul 2, squeezing the rope to making high performance braking. The design of the Jul 2 makes paying rope out easier to lead climbers if the device is used in the "open" position with the thumb, it further assists belayers with lead falls.
