As we all know, keeping yourself cool and dry whilst working hard is a difficult matter, especially in humid climates such as we have here in Wales. The place where you will feel the effects of any moisture is against the skin, which is why it is important to move any perspiration rapidly away from your body. The most efficient way of moving moisture away from you is by wearing man made 'wicking' fabrics (remember cotton may be cool for lounging around in, but it soaks up any sweat and holds it next to your body).
We keep a full range of baselayers from those designed to keep you cool when running in summer to those that will keep you warm when standing around in the snow. For warm places and higher levels of activity, light weights are the best and looser cuts will feel more comfortable. Mid weights are the general purpose guys who can cover autumn, winter and spring (in the UK at least). Heavyweight and wool mix base layers are designed for winter activities where you may be fairly active and then need to wait around a lot (on a winter climb in The Brecon Beacons for example). You will need a garment that keeps you warm and also wicks any moisture away from you so that you don't chill or cramp when you stop.
Our range of synthetic fibre base layers is covered mainly by Odlo, Helly Hansen and Marmot. These tops are generally a good all-round choice due to their high wicking capabilities
The range from Icebreaker covers everything from lightweight t-shirts for the warmer months to full 260 weight winter mountain garments. The merino wool they use is warm, breathable and highly resistant to picking up body odours, so it's ideal for extended use. You can even trace the wool in your garment back to the New Zealand farm it came from. Ice Breaker hats and gloves can be found elsewhere on the website. Most pieces from our IceBreaker range have been enthusiastically and thoroughly tested by our staff, and on most days at least one is wearing an Icebreaker garment.
Helly Hansen produce what is probably the best known range of base layers. The snug stretchy Helly fit means that it provides unrestricted movement when worn under other garments- it can be seen under many athletes kits during training (the Welsh and Cardiff Blues Rugby teams for example) as well as on hills throughout the world. Helly also do a range of warmer winter Baselayers. However they do get a little pongier than some other base layers hence the term 'smelly helly'!
If you're looking for a synthetic range that does keep the odour away, consider Odlo, whose range of active baselayers are all equipped with the Odlo Effect, a special method of applying silver ions to the fabric to help keep the baselayer fresh. The pinnacle of our range from Odlo is the I-Thermic, a heated baselayer that can be adjusted, and will regulate your temperature, keeping you warm without overheating.
If you need something even warmer, microfleecesalso make ideal expedition weight base layers and the more fitted versions of these are useful for the most extreme conditions. .
