Caving harnesses come as two separate pieces, a sit harness and a chest harness and must be used together. Our sit harnesses
are lightweight, abrasion resistant and simple. They join at the centre using a D shaped maillon
which holds all of your SRT gear, and crucially, the chest jammer
close to your centre of gravity, meaning that you are in the most efficient position to ascend a rope. The superavanti and the fractio
are highly adjustable and come in two sizes, so will fit all sizes of caver, with the fractio having an extra waistband for lower back support but holding the chest jammer in a slightly less efficient position. Caving sit harnesses should never be used for climbing.
The low attachment point (maillon) means that in a fall you are more likely to find yourself upside down and increases the danger in this situation that the harness will come off as it does not sit around the smallest part of your waist. For this reason if you will only be using a ladder and lifeline
(ie no SRT) it is wise to go for a simple, alpine style climbing harness
instead. Your sit harness needs to be paired with a chest harness.
These are not usually designed to be load bearing and come in a few different styles. They will all sit over your shoulders and loop through the upper hole in the Petzl croll
. This allows the croll to move up the rope as you stand up in your footloop. They are all very adjustable - useful for different sizes of caver and for adjusting beween loose (general cave bimbling) and tight (going back up the rope).
